The build · three ways

Face, edge, or end grain.

A solid surface is boards glued into one plane — and the way those boards face the world is the construction. Three builds, three looks, three kinds of wear. Every species runs in all three.

WIDE BOARDS, LAID FLAT

Face grain

Boards laid flat, wide faces up — the construction that shows the most wood. The furniture look: dining tables, desks, shelving, and any top where the surface is admired more than it is worked.

STRIPS ON EDGE, LAMINATED

Edge grain

Boards turned on edge and laminated — most of what the world calls butcher block. Tighter pattern, stiffer and more dimensionally stable panel: the standard for counters that work every day.

BLOCKS ON END — FIBERS UP

End grain

Short lengths stood on end so you look into the fibers — the true chopping block. Cuts slip between fibers instead of severing them, so it's gentlest on edges and hides use best. The thickest build we run.

Common questions

Which construction is butcher block?

Usually edge grain — narrow strips laminated on edge, the calm linear surface most butcher block actually is. End grain is the checkerboard chopping-block version, and the one to cut on directly.

Which is right for a dining table?

Face grain, classically — it shows the most figure and a dining top is seen far more than it's cut on. Edge grain suits tables that double as daily work surfaces.

Does the construction change the price?

It can — construction and thickness set the labor and the board footage, and every combination prices live in the configurator. Species stays a separate line: the material cost only.

Can an edge or end grain top mix two species?

Yes — edge and end grain tops can blend two species in equal parts: alternating strips on edge grain, a checkered field on end grain, arranged at the shop's discretion. Pairs cross families — Walnut, the maples, the oaks, and the mahogany family mix with each other, never with their own kin, and Padauk pairs with the oaks and maples. Walnut and Hard Maple is the classic. Choose a second species under the construction step and it prices live.
