Rift Sawn vs. Quarter Sawn White Oak

Every board starts as a decision about angle. When a sawyer breaks down a log, the blade meets the growth rings somewhere between parallel and perpendicular — and that angle is the whole difference between plain, rift, and quarter sawn lumber.

The definitions

Plain sawn (also called flat sawn) cuts straight across the log; the rings meet the face at a shallow angle, up to about 30 degrees, and the face shows the familiar cathedral arches. Quarter sawn splits the log into quarters first, so the rings meet the face at 60 to 90 degrees. Rift sawn sits between, roughly 30 to 60 degrees, cut to keep the rings as consistent as possible from board to board.

How each looks in white oak

White oak makes the differences vivid because of its medullary rays — ribbons of tissue that radiate from the log's center. Quarter sawn slices along those rays and shows them as dramatic ray fleck, the shimmering figure you see in Stickley furniture. Rift sawn deliberately avoids the rays and produces the straightest, calmest, most linear grain a board can have. Plain sawn shows the cathedral: expressive, traditional, and never quite the same twice.

Why rift and quarter cost more

Both cuts waste more of the log and take more handling than plain sawing, so the yield is lower and the price per board foot is higher. That premium buys more than looks: boards cut this way move less across their width with seasonal humidity, which matters for wide glue-ups like tabletops and counters.

When to spec each

Rift sawn is the architect's default for long, calm surfaces — counters, conference tables, anywhere the grain should read as a line rather than a landscape. Quarter sawn is for pieces meant to show figure. Plain sawn is right when warmth beats uniformity, and it is the most economical of the three.
